French Toast Casserole

I had this recipe sitting around for years and I finally got the itch to try it. If there's really a heaven, this is what it tastes like. Add some Farmer John's maple flavored bacon, some Italian sausage, several different kinds of fresh fruit, orange juice and coffee, and you've got a really great breakfast that everyone will rave about. In fact, in my dreams of owning a B&B, this is my signature breakfast.

Main Ingredients:
2-1/4 cups half and half
1-pound loaf of French bread cut in 1-inch slices
6 eggs
2 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

Topping:
1 stick melted butter
1 cup brown sugar
2 tablespoons light corn syrup
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

The night before you plan to serve this for breakfast, generously spray a big baking dish with Pam. Cut the French loaf in half lengthwise, then holding both halves together, cut it into one-inch slices. Arrange the pieces in the pan crust side up.

Whisk the main ingredients in a small bowl. Pour over the bread and baste until the slices are soaked thru. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate over night.

Mix the topping ingredients in a small bowl, cover and let it sit out overnight.

In the morning, nuke the topping for 15 seconds to soften it then pour it over the bread. Cover the dish with foil. Place in a large deep roasting pan filled with one inch of water creating a water bath. Bake at 350° for one to one and a half hours. In one hour remove the foil and test the inside center. It's done when it's just barely firm. Cover with foil and bake longer if needed. When it's done, remove the foil and bake for another 15 minutes. Serve with melted butter and maple syrup.
