Augie

Augie's first picture

This is my Augie, an adorable little girl who filled a hole in our lives that we didn't even know was there.  She came to us at 4:30 in the morning on August 16th, 2002 when Bailey woke me up barking his head off.  He ran from the living room to the bedroom, jumped on the bed, off the bed, back to the living room, back to the bed, over and over saying, "Mom! Mom! Come see! Come see!"  (Bill was far away in dreamland and didn't hear a thing 'til later.) So I got up and heard, "YOW! YOW! YOW! YOW!" coming from the bushes near the front porch. I thought it might be an animal that had been horribly injured so I went back in and got a flash lite, went back out and looked and sure enough, a tiny kitty. I lured it out of the bushes with some leftover chicken from dinner the nite before and scooped it up — a little girl, not injured but absolutely terrified and so incredibly skinny that she weighed not much more than a handful of feathers. I have no idea of where she came from or how she got here. No one in our neighborhood had lost a kitten, and it's a wonder that the coyotes didn't get her first because they're out every night in the hills behind our house.  So Bill and I came to the conclusion that Augie was a gift and that Bailey found himself a little sister. And what a darling little treasure. She has totally captured our hearts.

Her name is Augie2, short for August 2002, and so we called her Augie Augie. She was about 10 weeks old when I found her so I gave her the same birthday as my mom, June 5th. And believe it or not, Augie and Bailey became instant buddies, they even sleep curled up together on our bed. I often say I should change her name to MeTooMeToo because whatever Bailey does, wherever Bailey goes, Augie says, "Me too! Me too!" In fact, she lived in the house for the first year of her life but she was so miserable that we finally decided to let her go in and out with Bailey through the dog door. Now where we go, she goes and she's the most contented kitty on earth.

Augie's first day with us was a big day for such a little girl.  By the evening, she was totally exhausted. When my girlfriend Laura came over to see her, Augie daintily ate dinner and then crashed contentedly in Laura's arms where she stayed all the while we ate dinner. To this day, she still loves to be cuddled up in my arms in a blanket.
